That's quite a nice collection of current & former listies, along with some cool authors.

Yes. One of the reasons I did it was to have the list for further action. After taxes get filed :<}

Are you looking forward to your reluctant return of extortionate overpayment? ;)

hmmm. *parses mightily* * gives up *

but I just filed the d*mn things. And it worked out that the refund is a good approximation of the first est. payment for 2006, thus reducing paperwork for everyone a tad.

and I just found out the first one on the trustflow list is on other lists I'm on, so off to get at least that done tonight before addressing library payroll.

See, it can't be a "refund", since it's your own money anyway.

The whole tax thing is a mess. Even [livejournal.com profile] ndrosen goofed when preparing his this year; we got an extension.

Yeah. I hate it. And have to do them for a couple non-profits I'm treasurer for. Last year my hard drive crashed just before April 15. But TurboTax was very good about letting me reinstall - I called and got a reinstallation number, no hassle. But I got an extension anyway :<).

re: refund - well, possession is nine-tenths of the law :<). Yeah, it's our money, but I think they are fairly reasonable about collection - we can pay less early, no penalty for small errors, moderate interest for moderate errors, interest and penalties for large errors. They'll even give interest for things they collect in error. Had a case with the Library I'm treasurer for - we got into trouble and they charged us interest and penalty - which I paid, but pointed out that we had sent in the money at the right time - but they sent it back because we didn't understand a form and filled it out wrong. They bought it, returned the collected funds, with interest. So, I'm ambivalent. I'd like a simpler system.

I once read a sf story [called "Tax Day", iirc, but I forget the author] in which the back story includes how, once folks were able to choose what their tax dollars went for, there was universally less fussing about the amount of the payment.

This was obviously fantasy, but wouldn't it be cool?

Yes. Might work, to some extent. United Way does something like this. Could use relative over- and under- subscription as an indication of public support for various programs.

COMPLETELY UNRELATED.

There is a man. His name is Jim Dodge. He wrote some very fun and deleriously joyful fiction. Seek out: Stone Junction, Fup and Not Fade Away. Also, he has a book of poetry which I do not own, dammit.

It struck me as something you might enjoy. Ergo, this post.

Thank you!

And how are you doing?

[identity profile] countrycousin.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Very well, thank you. Away being a grandparent for a while, in Houston, where the climate is much different from Vermont or Finland. Youngsters seem to be much more active these days. It couldn't be me, I suppose . . .
