Book meme

aaack!  I wasn't tagged by [livejournal.com profile] elfbiter.  Maybe I made too much of a fuss last time :<}

But my eyesight is holding up pretty well, so:

A: Name a book you could not stop reading.

Hawaii  - was in the first year of grad school, picked it up, had a bit of a problem getting into it, succeeded, stayed up all night :<(.  It was good enough, but not that good.   Had a  similar experience years later with Lord of the Rings    but that was after we got to Moria.  I had to slog getting to Bree.  But that was that good.

B: Name a book you have tried to read through for a long time.

Oh, several.  War and Peace  Don Quixote  (but I've read a lot of it)    MTW's Gravitation

C: How many books you are reading right now?

Two or three, plus half a dozen that I've completed but like to revisit.  (currently Bujold's Chalion series and Manning Coles' ghost stories, but at other times Tolkein, Sayers, Brust, Heinlein, Stout, GRRMartin, Eddings (sorry about that - but I think he's funny), Clement , others - there's a reason I don't like to dispose of  books.)

D: How many books you do read in a year?

I have no idea- I don't keep count.  (that was [livejournal.com profile] elfbiter's answer - it is mine, too, but I'd guess 20 or so.)

F: Have you worked in a book-related profession?

Not really, but I'm Treasurer of the local library - and Treasurer of the Friends of the Library.  I get to write myself(in Treasurer mode) checks and deposit them!  I also get to make out 990s and W2s - not nearly as entertaining.

G: Name a good book someone bought for you.

The best was LotR, which my brother got for me in the 60s.

H: Name the last book you bought for someone else?

A friend of mine just visited.  He gave me David Allen's Getting Things Done  I gave him Bujold's Chalion trilogy, but they were travelling, so only took the first  (and I don't think he's into fantasy much - but it has other merits.)

I: Name the most expensive book you ever bought?

I really don't know.  I'm not into book collecting, but I have some reference books and text books that were expensive when they were purchased.  My opinion of the best new book bargain was Abramowitz and Stegun's Handbook of Mathematical Functions.

J: Name a book you picked up in random and liked.

Oh, many of these, but Bujold's Shards of Honor got me started there.  Picked it up in a library.  Got started on lots of authors that way.

K: Name the oldest book you have?

I don't really know.  I have several books that used to belong to my grandparents.  They were common collections of the time and many are not in very good condition.  A Tennyson volume has an 1876 date in it.

L: Name a book you read because someone recommended it to you but you did not like.

hee!  I went to school!  OK, since school.  And actually finished?  Well, there were books for discussion groups (which I suppose counts), many of which were uninspiring.  I didn't care for Freda - a disappointment since I had enjoyed the film.

M: Have you ever read something out of a sense of duty?

See above.  OK, Zinn's A People's History of the United States, 'nother discussion group.   Good book, actually, but I don't think socialism the panacaea he seems to.

N: What you would take to read through something you despise?

Well, I posted a review of Behe's book a few entries ago.  I said it was a good book, but I didn't expect to wind up saying that when I picked up the book.  I really don't think much of his argument, but my motivation for reading the book was to see what all the fuss was about.

O: The most unusual bookmark you know?

have to pass on this one.

P: Name the most inconvenient book you know.

Pick a new computer.  Pick a book out of the box.  If it isn't in the running, it is a paragon of its class.

If you want a tag you'll have to do it on your own.
EDIT - I don't seem to have mastered font changes in Semagic :<(. And I forgot to cut :<(.

I could never wade through Don Quixote. Either something got lost in the translation I was reading, or that was the most horrifyingly boring narration I've ever attempted.

Always meant to read War and Piece, but never got around to it. Recently found a couple of sites with libraries of books online (which has been helping with my classic lit awareness), so am going to have to look it up.

Having old books on line is helpful. I can get rid of some of my old paperbacks!

Take a look at
http://www.online-literature.com/
and
http://lib.aldebaran.ru/genre/sf_root/
The second site is in russian and has mostly russian books, but a good chunk is english. If you look at where the links on the left side lead, the actual page names are in english, even though the links are typed in russian, so you should be able to navigate okay. And usually, the english books are listed first.

(the second site also has more current books... violating copyright laws left and right, of course)

BAck in school it seemed like teachers were selecting books to alianate children from reading books by selecting particularly boring ones...

In fact the first Vorkosigan-related book i found was Cordelia's Honor. I ended up collecting rest of the series before I read them and then wrote a review about it...

Cordelia's Honor is what I now possess. 2d copy; gave the first away like I did with the first Chalion book.

My experience wasn't that bad, but I seemed to enjoy the books I found for myself more than those that were assigned.
